Water filtration and softeners in West Des Moines, Iowa
West Des Moines runs its own utility, West Des Moines Water Works, and it is one of only four water producers inside Central Iowa Water Works. Most members buy their water treated. This one makes it. That matters when you are comparing quotes, because a contractor who cannot name your utility has not looked at your water.
Water utility: West Des Moines Water Works
Role in Central Iowa Water Works: water producer
County: Polk and Dallas counties
June 2026 watering ban: Covered by the 8 June 2026 mandatory lawn watering ban
One of four producers in the system
West Des Moines Water Works treats and produces its own water on top of distributing it, which puts it in a group of four alongside Des Moines Water Works, Grimes and Polk City. When regionalization created Central Iowa Water Works on 1 January 2025 it changed who wholesales the water. Your phone call and your rate still go to the same place they always did.
West Des Moines also straddles two counties, Polk and Dallas, so your address can sit on one side of the line and your neighborhood on the other. The utility is the thing that decides your water, and the county line has nothing to do with it.
West Des Moines Water Works customers were named in the mandatory watering ban the CIWW board enacted on 8 June 2026.
Getting your own West Des Moines numbers
West Des Moines Water Works publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report with system-wide nitrate and hardness figures. It is the document to ask for before anyone quotes you, and it is free.
What it will not tell you is the reading at your kitchen sink, which is what sizes a softener and decides whether you need reverse osmosis. We measure that at no charge and put the two side by side.
